The American Dream

On July 4th, 1776, on the sultry streets of Philadelphia, learned men signed a document that proclaimed that the thirteen British colonies on the North American mainland were now free and independent states.  In declaring independence from Great Britain, the United States of America claimed freedom and liberty.  Ever since that day, American have gather on the 4th of July to celebrate their freedom and the opportunity to pursue the American Dream.

Yet on this 4th of July many who live in our nation will find it hard to celebrate.  They find themselves held captve bymany things – all which keep them from moving forward towards finding and fulfilling the American Dream.  Many are held captive by drugs, poor economic conditions, lack of good schools and much more.  But at the heart of all that holds people captive is a three letter word that too many times has been left out of the discussion when speaking of freedom and success – “sin.”  It’s almost as if we are ashamed to use the word because it’s old fashion to use it or because it’s a word that I don’t want to hear.

However, St. Paul reminds us in Romans chapter 7, that sin is the root of our problems as individuals and as a nation.    There he says that he is held “captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members(v23).”  Today whether or not we like to use the word, the truth is that sin has a terrible grip on our nation and its people and it is holding them captive preventing them from going after the American Dream and becoming all our Creator made them to be.

Is there answer?  Paul continues; “Wretched man that I am!  Who will deliver me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”  It is through faith in Christ’s suffering, death and resurrection that one is set free from the sin that holds one captive.  Paul in his letter to the Church at Philippi wrote; “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (4:13).”  For those who are being held captive by sin and its consequences on this 4th of July, – for those who feel left out of all that America has to offer – the answer is Christ Jesus.  There is no true freedom – there is no true peace away from Christ Jesus.

So if you are feeling like you are missing out on something this 4th of July.  If you feel like there should be more to life.  If you think the American Dream can’t be found.  Then turn to Christ Jesus and be set free from all that holds you back.

And on this 4th of July, give God thanks for all your blessing given you because you live in this great nation.  When you see a veteran, say “thanks for helping keep us free.”  Have a safe 4th of July!  God bless the USA!
